When Donald J. Trump was officially elected President of the United States, it marked the turning point for America’s government. President Trump obviously has wrought many changes to the highest levels of the government but his most mysterious, and potentially impactful, has been the nomination of Betsy DeVos to the role of Secretary of Education. Betsy DeVos is a Michigan-born, devout conservative who has spent the majority of her public career becoming a champion for public schools. Her husband, Dick DeVos, ran for Governor of Michigan back in 2006. There isn’t very much information about Ms. DeVos out there, but what is on the web points to someone who is focused on bringing change to the educational system.
There has been an insistence on the part of the mainstream media to paint Betsy DeVos as a fish out of the water, or a suit simply filling a title that needed to be filled. However, those closest to Betsy DeVos know her as something quite different: a professional who is willing to fight tooth and nail, sometimes even against her own party’s interests, in order to accomplish what she believes in. Prominent progressive Randi Weingarten, President of the group American Federation of Teachers, says, “There is a real tendency to underestimate her.” Truer words have rarely been spoken about a public official.
Ms. DeVos was born and raised in Holland, MI before she moved in order to attend Calvin College. While at school, DeVos would fall in love with and become a devout believer in the charter system for schools. Led by a mixture of religious faith and conservative values, DeVos has become a leading voice in the fight to bring charter schools to the national level. Now, as the Secretary of Education, DeVos will be uniquely qualified in her quest. In fact, one could say that her elevation to heading the Department of Education is the culmination of a lifelong journey. DeVos has spent the better part of the past thirty years fighting to make charter schools common around the country — and she is starting to succeed.
While Donald Trump continues to make headlines for all sorts of reasons, Betsy DeVos is quietly steering the Department of Education toward her ideals for the American school system. With prominent Republicans behind her, it looks like Betsy DeVos may be in it for the long haul in a job that could give her the chance to make a huge impact on the nation.
