One way he has committed himself to this cause is by donating $1 million to Dallas Zoo to help improve the hippo habitat and reopen it to the public. This new hippo habitat is named the Highland Capital Lodge after James Dondero’s firm.

Beyond the zoo, James Dondero has also donated money to the Perot Museum of Nation Science, the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Institute, Uplift Education, and Snowball Express. He is determined to grow his business in a selfless manner that helps to promote his community.
Recently he and the CEO of The Dallas Foundation have formed the Highland Dallas Foundation Inc. to help in selecting charities for Dondero to donate too.
